After watching this activity, you should be able to:

  • Describe the normal appearance of a postmenopausal endometrium and the sonographic standards for its evaluation;
  • Explain the postmenopausal endometrial measurement threshold and its significance in excluding malignancy;
  • List the benefits of saline infusion sonography in the evaluation of postmenopausal bleeding;
  • Characterize the usefulness of transvaginal sonography in the triage of women in whom office endometrial sampling was insufficient; and
  • Discuss the use of transvaginal ultrasound in postmenopausal women without bleeding and the significance of an incidentally identified thickened endometrium.

Elysia Moschos, MD

Professor, Dept of Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center; Administrative Director of Gynecologic Ultrasound Women and Infant Specialty Services, Parkland Hospital

Dr. Moschos is a full professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She received her undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. After completing her residency in OBGYN at Baylor Medical Center she was recruited to join the faculty at UT Southwestern. In an imaging unit staffed by MFMs and Radiologists, Dr. Moschos is the sole generalist OBGYN sonologist in the Parkland Hospital OBGYN Sonography Unit, where she has read Gyn & 1st trimester studies for the past 20 years. Last year, the Parkland OBGYN ultrasound unit conducted over 39,000 studies, 10,000 of which were Gyn/1st trimester. She has authored numerous ultrasound articles as well as the "Imaging" chapter for the textbook Williams Gynecology. She was awarded Senior membership status by the AIUM Board of Governors in 2010 as a result of her significant contributions to the field of ultrasound.
